Pilot car certification and training

We separate product guidance from regulatory claims and link to official sources where rules or public data are discussed. Report a correction.

Pilot car certification and training must be checked for the states where you plan to operate. Do not assume one course is accepted everywhere. Ask the state DOT or permit office which credentials apply to your role, which training providers it recognizes, and whether an out-of-state certificate is accepted.

Before paying for a course

Tell the state office where the credential was issued and what work you intend to perform. Ask about accepted providers, renewals, documentation, and any additional role-specific requirements. Save the official response or current manual reference.

Before accepting an interstate job

Review each state on the permitted route. Bring the credentials the relevant offices require. A carrier’s request for a certificate is separate from verifying acceptance in a jurisdiction.

Keep records current

Keep copies of credentials and expiration dates with your operator records. Fleet tools can organize certification and insurance expiration records, but the software does not issue certifications or determine legal eligibility.
