Pilot car safety planning guidelines

We separate product guidance from regulatory claims and link to official sources where rules or public data are discussed. Report a correction.

Pilot car safety starts with reviewing the permit, route, role, and communications plan before the movement. Use official state instructions and the movement team’s briefing. This overview is a preparation checklist, not driving instruction or permission to control traffic.

Brief the movement

Confirm the route, meeting point, contact numbers, assigned positions, and how the team will communicate a stop or hazard. Resolve unclear instructions with the carrier and permit office before departure.

Check the vehicle and records

Review vehicle condition and required equipment against the relevant state instructions. Keep permits, credentials, insurance records, and emergency contacts accessible. Do not rely on a checklist from another state.

Capture the job completion

When safely parked, record route changes, delays, and job completion details. The trip report should reflect what happened and support a review before invoicing.
