What is a pilot car?

We separate product guidance from regulatory claims and link to official sources where rules or public data are discussed. Report a correction.

A pilot car is a road escort vehicle that supports an oversize-load truck movement. The operator helps the movement team communicate and respond to conditions under the applicable permit and state requirements. You may also hear “escort vehicle” or “P/EVO,” short for pilot/escort vehicle operator. This is trucking-related work, not aviation.

Lead, chase, and high pole

Lead and chase describe escort positions ahead of and behind the load. High-pole work involves checking clearance as assigned for the movement. The actual staffing, equipment, and duties must be confirmed for the route and permit.

More than driving a marked vehicle

A job also involves preparation, communication, documentation, and coordination with the carrier. Do not assume an escort assignment gives blanket authority to direct traffic or depart from the permit.

The business side

Independent operators also quote jobs, record loaded and deadhead miles, submit trip sheets, and invoice the client. Pilot Car Pros organizes these business records around the run.
